Speaking Task 1
You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then
be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.
Charles Dickens was the most popular English novelist in the nineteenth century. When he was twelve years old, Dickens worked in a factory. That is why his novels often tell stories about young people who are very poor and live in terrible conditions.
Most of the writer’s books first appeared as serials in magazines. He was paid by the word, which is why his books often have very long descriptive passages. Each month he wrote the next chapter for his story, and this meant that he could change the plot of his book based on whether his readers liked his story or not.
Speaking Task 2
You are going to take part in a telephone survey. You have to answer six questions. Give full
answers to the questions. Remember that you have 40 seconds to answer each question.
Speaking Task 3
You are going to give a talk about books. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak
for not more than 2 minutes (10-12 sentences).
Remember to say:
- whether reading books is still a popular pastime with teenagers or not, and why
- what kind of books you are fond of, and why
- which you prefer: e-books or paper books, and why
