Although British athletes are not often very successful in world sporting events, they are well known for having popularized and written the rules for many games that are played internationally today. For example, Golf was first played in Scotland in the fifteenth century, and the golf club in Saint Andrews is still viewed as the leading authority on golf in the world.
The game of cricket was also first played in England in the sixteenth century, and football, rugby, and hockey were all created in England in the nineteenth century. With their great Empire in the 1800s, they were able to export these games across the globe. Without the British, football might not have become the popular sport that it is today.
