The series introduces us to the Alvarez family, who live in Los Angeles. The main character is Penelope, a single mom and military veteran. She lives with her two children, Elena and Alex, and her Cuban mother, Lydia. Penelope is trying to balance her job as a nurse with raising her kids. In this episode, she is also dealing with her teenage daughter, Elena, who is going through a rebellious phase. The family’s neighbor, Schneider, often stops by and becomes a part of their conversations.

In epsiode 2, Penelope faces issues at work related to sexism. She discusses these problems with her family—Lydia (her mother) and Elena (her daughter)—as well as Schneider (their neighbor). They all have different views on sexism, showing how the generations perceive the issue differently. Lydia, who is more traditional, sees things one way, while Elena, who is young and progressive, sees it another way. This leads to a discussion about gender roles and stereotypes, which is both funny and thought-provoking.
